Newton Investment Properties LLC Annexation and R13 Zoning Approved by Athens Council
The Athens City Council conducted a public hearing and approved an ordinance (11B) to annex 18.88 acres located south of New Cut Road and west of Lucasf Road for Newton Investment Properties LLC. The property, currently in unincorporated Limestone County, will be zoned R13, High-Density Single-Family Residential District. A neighbor expressed support, preferring city zoning over potential county uses. Staff had no issues, noting sewer access was secured. The planning commission recommended approval.
Friendship Church Property Rezoned to R12 Medium-Density Single-Family Residential
The Athens City Council held a public hearing and approved Ordinance 11D to rezone 1.88 acres at the northwestern corner of West Washington Street and Lucasf Road. The property, owned by Friendship Church, will be rezoned from Institutional District to R12 Medium-Density Single-Family Residential District to match its current residential use. The property configuration meets R12 criteria, and an easement for sewer access has been arranged. The planning commission recommended approval.

Councilman Cybert Reimbursed for Municipalities Convention Expenses

Athens Authorizes Mayor to Apply for $3.4 Million USDOT Safe Streets Grant
The Athens City Council authorized the Mayor to apply for a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant. The application is for $3,455,575, comprising $2,764,111 in federal funds and $691,464 in sponsored funds. If awarded, the funding will be used for safety improvements at the intersection of Elm Street, Alabama Highway 99, and Hind Street/Edgewood Road. The city agrees to provide matching funds and execute the application and agreement. This item was added to the agenda due to a time-sensitive deadline.
