The council approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor and director of public service to enter into contracts for the replacement of the municipal building generator. Ashland Resident Raises Sidewalk Disrepair Concerns; City Cites Property Owner Responsibility
During the public comment session, a resident raised concerns about the disrepair of sidewalks in Ashland. The resident was informed that current city laws place responsibility for sidewalk repair and replacement on private property owners. While the city is not aggressively enforcing this due to the monumental task, they have discussed potentially allocating funds for sidewalk repairs in the future, possibly by including language in street resurfacing levies. The city acknowledges the issue is complex, with challenges including historical enforcement issues and differing sidewalk conditions across neighborhoods. Residents were advised to be cautious when walking and to potentially use streets if sidewalks are impassable, though walking in the street is also discouraged due to traffic.
Ashland Prepares for Freedom Monument Dedication; Seeks Veteran Participation
The city is preparing for the dedication ceremony of a new Freedom Monument on July 4th at 2 p.m. The monument, made of granite, features six pillars representing each military branch, each weighing two to four tons and standing approximately 20 feet tall. These pillars are described as being in the shape of the Washington Monument and are unique in Ashland County and surrounding areas. The city is encouraging veterans to register by visiting the city website, Facebook page, or calling the mayor's office to receive special instructions for the dedication day, including parking and formation details. Approximately 100 veterans have registered, but 150 more are needed. The construction area is nearing completion, with grass growing and exterior coverings being added to buildings.
Design Phase Begins for New Public Transit Building in Ashland
The city has signed a contract with Simonson Construction for the design phase of a new public transit building.
